Modern life is often considered more complex and stressful than primitive life for several reasons, despite the advancements in technology aimed at simplifying our lives.
This has, in fact, already happened. For example, take a look at your pencil, which is a fairly simple device. Do you know and understand every step of its manufacture, without having to "Google" it?
Now take a look at your smart phone, or even the computer you are using now. Do you understandeverything about it? How it works, how it was produced? How the OS works? How the silicon chips were manufactured? What about the keyboard? Do you understand how each key function?
Or for that matter, the internet, which has become an integral part of all of our lives. Do you fully understand how it works? All the many protocols, how the routers and switches make dicisions on how to route the packets - do you even understand what packets are?
And I can do the same with the car you drive everyday, the food you buy - the logistics behind getting it from the farm to the factory to your local market?
Most people don't even understand something as simple as electricity; what happens when you flick on the light switch. No clue. Nor do they understand how florescent and LED lamps work. They mey understand incandescent bulbs, but even they may be pushing it.
And let's not even talk about the large Hadron Collider; the most complex machine man has ever built. The level of Science and engineering that went into it even boggles my mind.
Do you understand how the Economy works, Education System works, Medical System works, Agriculture works - name anything it has become too complicated.
Technology has already exceeded the point where no one individual can hope to understand it all. Technology relies on division of labour. Everybody learns part of the system.
While technology has undoubtedly made many aspects of life more convenient, it has also introduced new stressors such as constant connectivity, the pressure of always be available, and the fear of missing out (FOMO). Additionally, technology can sometimes complicate tasks rather than simplify them.
Broadly, for humans collectively, technology has made life EASY but more COMPLEX. The complexity of technology will only continue to increase. There is no stopping it. It is mainly due to the exponentially expanding knowledge and choices, compounded further by the ever increasing pace of change.
In olden days. all that people had to do was to grow up, have a source of income. have family, spend time with them, raise the kids, enjoy the festivals, fairs once a year, and wai for the last moment. They had to worry only for food, shelter, safety and bit dignity or honour in the society. That's it. I am not saying that life was easy the, but it was simpler.
Whereas nowadays, since we get to know everything about anything, we grow a tendency of having them. Be it money, fame, skills or anything. We are getting overloaded with knowledge. Because of internet and entertainment media, the whole idea of life is changing. We want to become a successful person, an entrepreneur, want to have a relationship, want to learn music, want to travel the whole world, become rich and what else? We start to compare ourselves, as we get to know what other person has done in his/her life. That is the biggest villain of peace of mind.
Social media ond articles like 'X number of things you have to do before you turn Y years old' are enough to drive the crazy clueless youth to wrong path.
It is true that we cannot exist on this earth without eating, having shelter, etc., and these needs require systems and methods of transaction. I understand the without some sort of structure placed into society, we would not have any freedom of self at all, but I argue that the majority of what we create , consume, talk about, focus on, and fret over is truly unnessary, created out of an ever-increasing disconnect that exist in many forms and places.
Ironically, so many of the jobs that exist today only do because of the manner in which we as humans have complicated life. The more we complicate, the more clean up we must attend to for these messes. Does that give us a sense of purpose? I think so.
Modern
civilization, due to its complexity, allows a person to have expertise in one
or related fields. The phrase “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” may not
apply to most people, but for a few exceptional people having a diverse set of
skills can be advantageous in certain scenarios.
In our daily life today, there are a lot of restrictions and barriers erected - either in the name of security or to gather information - for any form of interaction we want to do, access information or go to places. This makes the simple task become complex.
I'm sincerely trying to move towards a more minimalist existence as I searched through my life and identify what's important and what's not essential. I want to live a genuine life that's not so bogged down by all the nonsense.
So, life is getting complicated and if you don’t
want it, either you should have a strong mind or just disconnect from this
modern lifestyle and live in some remote village.
The best way to lead a simple life is to think high.
The higher are your thoughts, the simpler becomes your life because you have to then follow only one person's advice i.e. you.
